Rogaland region seen by international researchers

This session focuses on the status of university-industry collaborations (UICs) in Rogaland by presenting the results of two connected researches (one quantitative and one qualitative). The first part of the presentation attempts to illustrate how Rogaland performs in terms of UICs vis-à-vis other regions of Norway by using the data from a large-scale firm survey. This part will specify the distinct features of UICs that Rogaland firms and the UiS are involved in terms of geography, main UIC channel, innovation outputs and some other indicators. The second part of the session attempts to uncover the underlying mechanisms facilitating the development of UICs involving the UiS, and small and medium-sized (SME) manufacturing firms, in Rogaland. Data gathered through in-depth interviews is used to compare industry-university collaboration processes in Rogaland with processes involving manufacturing SMEs in other regions of Norway, Denmark and Portugal. In Rogaland, being able to deliver advanced products in an international market motivates the focal SMEs to collaborate with the UiS. The session will conclude by presenting some provocative / speculative food-for-thought for the regional actors.
